February 21, 2024 How to Increase Profitability on Network Cabling and AV Installations

Released February 21, 2024

Mike Barry of Millennium Systems Design shares how the switch to Kordz has optimised efficiency and profitability for his systems integration business by reducing problems on-site and post-installation.

The Kordz network and HDMI cabling that Mike Barry of Millennium Systems Design (MSD) deploys on large-scale AV projects may cost slightly more than some other brands he’s used during his 20-plus-year tenure in the systems integration business, but it has made a huge difference in the overall efficiency and profitability of his company.

The team at Kordz likes to say that ‘experiencing is believing’ when it comes to their thoughtfully designed and engineered line of professional grade connectivity products. Barry’s tech team quickly recognised the thin, flexible and compliant composition of Kordz cable was a huge time and trouble-saver, helping them complete jobs faster and with fewer complications. Moreover, MSD discovered cost savings and improved operational efficiency as a result of the switch to Kordz cabling due to fewer laborious and costly post-installation service calls. Indeed, Kordz’ extensive, quality range of practical and gracefully designed cabling reflects the company’s mission to ‘Kordzify’ connectivity by re-designing and re-engineering its products to meet the specific and evolving needs of professional systems technicians.

Barry says, “Before using Kordz cabling, on most large proposals we tacked on 10 percent as a cushion to correct any connectivity issues experienced post-installation.” Signal latency, interference, and lacklustre image and audio quality can occur from a faulty cable—and pinpointing the culprit once the system is fully installed can challenge even the most experienced technicians. Time and again, Barry and his team found the foundation of their smart home projects crumbling, impacting their client relationships and eroding their profitability. The problem was so prevalent, MSD had no choice but to weave cabling fixits into their operating costs and commit precious time, labour and service teams for ongoing house calls.

Pivotal to Profitability

After switching to Kordz as their go-to cable vendor, MSD has been able to turn that 10% safety net to somewhere between 3.5% and 5% for custom parts. Thanks to a range of connectivity that’s been Kordzified specifically for professionals, Barry and his team are no longer slaves to costly and frustrating service calls. They’re no longer ripping out and replacing shoddy cable. Instead, they’re providing a reliable, trouble-free infrastructure to customers that performs as it should… the first time. Callbacks due to connectivity issues have become a thing of the past, as have concerns about performance. “Our systems have never worked better,” Barry says. The extra $200 MSD might spend per $100,000 project for higher quality Kordz cabling is a minimal investment that provides an excellent return in terms of downstream cost savings, quality assurance, peace of mind and customer satisfaction.

More Choice, Less Waste

Also contributing to MSD’s connectivity success is Kordz’ wide range of cable lengths. Most HDMI cables come in a few standard lengths, which can often result in excess. “We end up paying for feet we don’t need and are burdened with finding a way to hide the waste. It can make our racks look messier than we’d like,” Barry explains. Because Kordz offers cabling in 30-centimetre increments up to 5.4 metres in its R.3 passive HDMI line, and full Ultra High Speed certified 8K support up to 20 metres with its PRS4 cabling, MSD can order the exact length needed and maintain a clean, tidy appearance in the rack. “Our customers have even noticed, commenting that “it’s a shame that you have to turn that beautiful rack around.”” For long runs that require the industry-first 20-metre HDMI cable, Barry no longer needs to add extenders–something that had previously added cost and labour to MSD’s larger AV installations.

Colour-Coordinated Identification

Last but not least, Barry notes the benefits the colour-coding on Kordz cable. It’s more than just visually attractive in a rack; it streamlines maintenance and upgrades for his team. No matter how much time has passed after the initial installation, or who has come and gone from the MSD team, technicians can quickly identify the correct cable because while labels fade, the colour of the cable lasts forever. “Coloured cabling may seem like a minor detail, but it’s made a huge difference in our efficiency and ability to service our clients,” Barry says; yet another example of ‘Connectivity. Kordzified’.

A Solid Foundation for Business Success

Good cables, bad cables. The seasoned former integrators at Kordz know it’s tough to tell the difference unless you’ve experienced it, and Barry certainly has by incorporating the Kordz line into his business. If his time in the trenches has taught him anything, it’s the importance of high-quality cabling—not only to the performance of a system but the profitability of an integration business. “It pays to use high-quality cable and Kordz has proven itself a leading provider of some of the world’s best connectivity solutions,” Barry acknowledges. MSD’s projects are clean, reliable and perform better than ever, clients and employees are happy, and the company is thriving from the support of a cabling manufacturer focused on helping professional integrators like Millennium Systems Design achieve higher quality installation ease and profitability.
