Prestigious honor from leading trade organisation signifies Chen’s long-standing leadership role and dedication to the systems integration industry.  

Kordz managing director James Chen was recently bestowed the honor and distinction of being named the 2023 CEDIA Fellow. With more than 30 years’ experience in the AV industry as visionary, entrepreneur and global thought leader, Chen’s professional career and long-standing involvement in CEDIA exemplifies the level of dedication, passion and commitment it takes to become a CEDIA Fellow. Chen’s appointment coincides with Kordz’ 20th anniversary, making the award all the more meaningful.   

“This has been such an extraordinary year for Kordz. In addition to celebrating 20 years in the game with our many partners across the globe who have worked alongside us to build this company, we’ve been delighted to have our new line of SlimCat networking systems recognised by two esteemed awards—becoming a CEDIA Fellow is the icing on the cake,” says Chen. 

Chen’s background in the professional AV community is as diverse as it is extensive. He started out in the trenches as a systems integrator, where he quickly discovered the challenges of designing and deploying networking systems. Naturally inquisitive, he knew “there had to be a better way”. Eager to streamline and simplify cabling installation, after some years working with global brands like Epson, Samsung and BenQ, Chen joined Kordz in 2008, where he spearheaded the company’s development of multi-award-winning and patented cable innovation and expanded distribution to more than 40 countries.  

“It’s been my dream and personal mission to help this industry become the very best it can be and so it has been deeply rewarding to have this opportunity to make a difference in the lives of fellow integrators. It excites me every day to get up and share the incredible science and potential of cable technology and the practical ways integrators can use this to blow customers away with their work,” says Chen. “As we like to say at Kordz, “It takes one to know one” and it’s my life’s work to watch the way technology is unfolding, listen to the challenges and needs of our integrators, dealers and key industry organisations like CEDIA, and use that to develop new products and approaches that make our work better, easier, seamless and allow systems to become all they can be.”  

CEDIA has been an important part of Chen’s life for decades and he is passionate about the vital role it plays in the industry. The training courses and networking opportunities provided by CEDIA helped pave his career path, form crucial industry relationships and establish Kordz as a global cable manufacturing leader. “CEDIA has given me so much over the years. I’ve always felt a desire to give back, to help shape the AV industry and help fellow manufacturers and dealers succeed in this exciting, dynamic business. I can’t thank them enough, and the many wonderful connections and lifelong friends I have made throughout the years.”  

Chen currently serves on CEDIA’s Technology Education Committee and Governance Committee. He also regularly authors thought leadership articles for leading trade journals and publishes educational whitepapers for dealers—sharing his passion and knowledge with his peers. Always learning and devoted to staying one step ahead of the game, Chen recently completed his study of artificial intelligence at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  

Chen will be honored during the 2023 CEDIA Smart Home Award ceremony in CEDIA’s three regions, starting with CEDIA Expo in Denver.
